The Australian Consumer Law
Since January 1 2011, The Australian Consumer Law has provided consumers with automatic rights known as consumer guarantees.
While these rights apply when overseas retailers
supply goods to Australia, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission
acknowledges:
“If you buy from an online seller based overseas, you should be aware that you may experience practical difficulties in obtaining a remedy from them”.
The lack of protection Australian laws provide to consumers purchasing online from overseas suppliers, has meant that consumers have become increasingly reliant on consumer laws that dictate the standard goods are supplied from in the original country. There is an extensive need for major manufacturing countries that supply goods to Australia, to improve consumer laws affecting the expected quality goods are supplied from, relevant to a rapidly growing online international commercial marketplace. Without this response Australian consumers will be cheated of the conventional rights The Australian Consumer Law provides them, but fails to protect on an international level due to practicality issues.
This website aims to educate consumers about the difficulties and safety issues that can affect the quality of a product purchased online from overseas retailers, because The Australian Consumer Law is harder to access. The conventional rights that are accepted within Australia are no longer a minimal standard expected by foreign retailers because the law is other countries is different to ours.
The video below explains The Australian Consumer Law rights that are able to be accessed by consumers when purchasing online. These rights apply to all Australian consumers no matter where they purchase the product, however it is much more difficult to enforce these rights if you purchase from online overseas retailers, as stated by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
